We recently slammed the books shut on another homeschool year. Diligently we plodded along for ten long months here. Curriculum, social activities, and grades have occupied my mom brain during the school year. Finally, the fog has lifted, and I can focus on items other than our homeschool, such as my cleaning schedule. As you know from The Dust Bunny Debate, I always try to keep my housework in check, but by the end of the school year, I find our cleaning schedules need a tune-up. So today I thought I would share with you my top tips for designing a cleaning schedule.
Consider your schedule
My first step in designing a cleaning schedule is to consider your weekly activities. For example, I try to avoid any outside activities on Mondays, so I always make this my laundry day. We are also out many times on Friday, so this is often a light cleaning day. I avoid too many big tasks in one day. For example, my laundry day and floor cleaning day are never the same, or this would make for a long day. I spread my bigger tasks throughout the week to avoid frustration.
Consider what gives you the most satisfaction
My first task of the morning is to make my bed. I feel accomplished knowing that my bed is tidy. I also feel like my house is cleaner when the laundry is caught up, and the kitchen is clean. These are the items that bring me the most satisfaction. Consider your most important areas before you design your cleaning schedule.
Set a daily and weekly cleaning schedule
My family often laughs at the amount of schedules in my home. I actually have a daily cleaning schedule, as well as a weekly one. Our daily schedules are divided into morning & evening chores. Make sure you include evening pickups in your schedule. A little mess first thing in the morning can quickly escalate into a disaster. A few quick chores in the evening (for both mom and the kids) can save your morning sanity.
Consider your expectations
Let’s be honest here, no homeschool family is going to have a magazine cover home. Our kids are home every day, conducting science experiments and art projects, so your house will be messy. I think the dreams of a pristine home will have to be put on the back burner for a few years. Does that mean that we need to live in total chaos? No way, but we do need to be honest about our situation. We also need to be realistic in our expectations for our chore lists. Can my 7-year-old dust, vacuum, and clean all the windows every day? Probably, but it is also outrageous to expect her to do so.
This is true for both me and the kiddos. There are weeks when I don’t want to do laundry on Monday. Guess what, it will still be there on Tuesday. It won’t go away. I find it best to just do what I need to do, and move on. As for the kids, consistency is key. I am clear in my expectations and then consistent with our schedule. We don’t skip chore days just because. It is a habit building process.
